ISLAMABAD - Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif yesterday called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed with him matters pertaining to national and regional security with specific reference to the unabated firing by Indian forces at Line of Control (LoC).

Political and Parliamentary observers were according special significance to the meeting as it was the first interaction between the two after the Corps Commanders meeting Friday last.

In that meeting, the army officers had shown serious concern over the ‘feeding’ of ‘fabricated and false’ news story on a high-level security meeting at Prime Minister’s House on Oct 3, directly hitting at the integrity of the Armed Forces.

The prime minister had already directed Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ahmad to probe out the whole issue and for that matter the writer of the story, Dawn journalist Cyril Almeida, was also put on ECL for some time.

But, some insiders in the ruling PML-N informed The Nation that Nisar was not comfortable with handling the issue as some of the people suspected of leaking and counter-confirming the information to the English daily journalist were not cooperating with him on the matter.

Sources said that the army chief also conveyed the concern of Corps Commanders on the issue which had dented the image of Pakistan at international level.

Sources said General Raheel also discussed with the PM the preparedness of armed forces deployed on both LoC and working boundary with India. He told the prime minister that Pakistan has no aggressive designs against any country; however, its forces were fully prepared for any situation and capable of defending each and every inch of country’s territory.

The situation along the Pak-Afghan border also came under discussion and both of them expressed satisfaction over the border management and check on the movement of militants across the border.

The COAS also briefed the premier on the gains in the ongoing military operation against militants in Tribal Areas and informed him that now they were in the process of rehabilitation of people in the areas cleared from militants.

The ongoing combing operation in the settled areas of the country, with specific reference to the Karachi operation, also figured in the meeting and both the prime minister and army chief expressed their resolve to continue the operation till the elimination of last terrorist from the country’s soil.
