KARACHI-The inaugural ceremony of the World Space Week (WSW-2016), organised by Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), was held here on Monday at National Center for Remote Sensing & Geo Informatics (NCRG) SUPARCO Headquarters.

A spokesman of the organisation said that Chairman SUPARCO, Qaiser Anees Khurram, was the chief guest of the ceremony.

He formally inaugurated the World Space Week celebrations to be held from 17-23 Oct 2016 in 14 cities of Pakistan.

Chairman SUPARCO, Qaiser Anees Khurram in his address said that ‘SUPARCO conducts World Space Week activities in over 14 cities simultaneously throughout the country and Pakistan has been on number one in the list of top ten countries around the world for conducting maximum activities during WSW-2015’.

He was of the view that the past two to three decades have seen tremendous enhancement in our capacity to survey and map our global environment through use of satellite remote sensing technology.

He said that Pakistan’s first remote sensing satellite; PRSS-1 is also under development stages and will be ready for launch in 2018.

With its successful launch, Pakistan will achieve yet another milestone by having self-reliance in earth observation through Satellite Remote Sensing.

A display of posters made by school students aged 8-11 years from all over the country adorned the lobby of the auditorium.

The inaugural ceremony concluded with inauguration of the space education bus by the chief guest and a team of SUPARCO scientists departed to create space related awareness in school students in rural areas of Sindh.
