ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet in compliance with the Prime Ministers directive, approved the Ramazan Package on Tuesday to provide immediate relief to the common man. The ECC, which met here at the PM Secretariat with Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin in chair, approved the Ramazan Package. According to the relief measures, the Utility Stores Corporation (USC) will sell 100,000 tonnes of sugar from utility stores outlets, instead of the normal 40,000 tonnes per month, at Rs 38 per kg during Ramazan. To enable them to do so, the extra sugar will be released from the imported sugar stocks. This will be equivalent to one thirds of the total consumption of the country of white sugar and should effectively check the price hike. As part of Ramazan Package, instead of 100,000 tonnes of Atta, 150,000 tonnes will be sold from utility store outlets at Rs 2 per kg less than the market rate. Likewise, instead of the agreed upon 30,000 tonnes of ghee/oil, 50,000 tonnes will be made available at Rs 91 per kg i.e. at a differential of Rs 20 per kg from the market price of ghee. The regulatory duty of 25 per cent will be suspended on the import of potato to facilitate its easy availability during Ramazan and assure its release and discourage hoarding and artificial price increase. The ECC waived the condition of presentation of ID card for purchasing items from USC. The ECC also approved the implementation of Combined Cycle Project at Guddu by Genco-II under the management of PEPCO, at the EPC price of US $ 602 million. The meeting also authorised the Genco-II/PEPCO to enter into contract with M/s HPE, after fulfilling formalities and undertake financing of project through banks best offer in consultation with the finance division and economic affairs division. It was decided that the ministry of finance would provide the requisite guarantee on behalf of the government of Pakistan for the credit facility of the project.
