LAHORE - President PML-F Punjab and member Punjab Assembly Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood has resigned from membership of Public Accounts Committee-II (PAC-II) in protest against election of Prime Minister Gilanis son Abdul Qadir as chairman of the said committee. Abdul Qadir Gilani was elected unopposed as chairman PAC-II in a meeting of the committee held at Punjab Assembly on Thursday. Talking to The Nation, Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood confirmed his resignation from membership of the committee, saying that he did not deem it proper to sit in that body despite close relationship and emotional attachment with Abdul Qadir Gilani. He said he had no issues with Abdul Qadir, as it was not his decision. Ahmad Mahmood was of the view that it was unjust to elect a junior member as the chairman and impose him on seniors. He said he had resigned on principles and would not oppose Shahbaz Sharif despite being ignored for the prestigious slot. It is interesting to note that Ahmad Mahmood got Abdul Qadir elected unopposed as the member Punjab Assembly on a seat vacated by him from Rahim Yar Khan. Makhdoom has on several occasions supported Shahbaz Sharif despite political pressure on him from different quarters. He was once considered a candidate for some ministerial slot, but he was not taken in the cabinet due to reasons best known to Shahbaz Sharif. A close aide of Makhdoom, however, said that he was more interested in chairmanship of the public accounts committee than in a ministry and that was the reason he resigned from the membership immediately after election of Gilanis son showing his utmost resentment over the decision. After attending PAC-II meeting on Thursday, Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood set off for Islamabad where he was likely to take up the issue with Prime Minister Gilani.
