RAWALPINDI - Hundreds of rail passengers were stranded on Thursday due to the countrywide strike by train drivers, which crippled services on some of the busiest routes in the country. A number of train drivers and firemen at Rawalpindi Railway Station went on strike in protest against the prejudice decision of transfer of one of the assistant driver Zeshan. Due to the unannounced strike as many as 23 trains delayed, while thousands of their passengers also confronted difficulties. The strike started at 3:50pm which called off at 6:41 after intervention of State Minister for Railways Jasim Mangrio and high-ups of Railway Department. On the occasion, Rail Mazdoor Ittehad (RMI) office-bearers Chaudhry Shabir, Mubarik Hussain, Khan Jadoon, Maqbool Hussain and Muhammad Hanif said that government had completely neglected the poor workers of railways during federal budget for 2009-10, which was a sheer injustice. They said that on one hand, government was raising our salaries while on the other hand GST was being eliminated. Government should not do this, they demanded. They said that railways employees were living in miserable condition but no one heed towards their problems. They said that there should be 100 per cent increase in wages of railways employees, as they had to perform their duties more than assigned hours.
