ISLAMABAD (Agencies) - President Asif Ali Zardari Monday again vowed to strengthen democracy and uproot extremism from the country, saying, We are ready to any every price as we will not allow the democratic system in the country to be derailed. President Zardari, also the co-chairman of PPP, expressed these views on the eve of the third anniversary of the Karzaz tragedy in a message on Monday. He paid glowing tributes to more than 150 martyrs who were targeted by terrorists as they had thronged the Karachi streets to welcome Shaheed Benazir Bhutto on her return to homeland after years of exile. He said the tragedy was a reminder that the main battle in Pakistan was between the forces of moderation and democracy and that of extremism and religious bigotry. Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was a symbol of resistance against militancy and the Karsaz attack was indeed an attack on all forces of moderation, he said. We must win this battle if we are to survive as a modern, moderate and democratic nation where ballot and not the bullet will determine the direction we take, he said in his message. Those who laid down their lives on this day three years ago are the heroes and heroines of the battle against extremism. They have lit the path with their blood for future generations to traverse in the fight against obscurantism, militancy and extremism, he reaffirmed. He said, Even in a distant age and climes they will serve as inspirational models and motivate people to fight the bigot and the militant to the finish. The president also promised to rehabilitate and honour the families of the martyrs who laid down their lives to protect the most popular leader of country like his father, who also became a victim of power corridor conspiracies.
