LAHORE - ASI Azeem Akhter, stationed at Defence-A Police Station , allegedly committed suicide on Sunday, shooting himself in the head.

Azeem in his 50s shot himself in the head with his pistol in the police station and suffered critical injuries, Cantt SP Imtiaz Sarwar told the media.

The ASI was shifted to Lahore General Hospital but he could not survive.

However, the independent sources could not confirm it as a suicide as the ASI was found already dead in his office.

The dead body has been shifted to the morgue for post-mortem.

Azeem was a resident of Narowal and father of two children.

IG Punjab Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera has taken notice of the suicide incident.

Akhter was dismissed from service some three months back over negligence charges when he was posted at Baghbanpura police station . He was later exonerated of the charges in the inquiry and reinstated to the service and posted at investigation branch in Defence-A police station two months ago.

SP Sarwar told the media that the ASI was alone in his official room and other policemen were busy in routine work when the official shot himself. Family members did not know why the officer committed suicide, the SP added.

IGP Sukhera has sought report from Lahore Capital City police Office (CCPO) Muhammad Amin Wains. The IGP also directed the CCPO to investigate the matter thoroughly and also extend financial assistance to the deceased’s family.
