KARACHI - Jamaat-e-Islami senior leader Dr Pervaiz Mehmood who was gunned down near KDA intersection North Nazimabad was laid to rest here on Tuesday. On the other hand, the JI announced a strike call for Wednesday (today) against the killing of the party leader. Dr Pervaiz along with his friend Khaliquz Zaman was shot dead when gunmen riding four motorbikes intercepted his car and sprayed bullets on it. The culprits managed to flee while victims were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced them dead. Scores of JI workers and leaders rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where enraged activists of JI ransacked the hospital and also resorted to indiscriminate firing. Following the murder of the JI leader, panic spread across the City and commercial and non-commercial activities were suspended. Dr Pevaiz started his carrier as an activist of Islami Jamiat-e-Tulba (IJT). Slain JI leader was also elected nazim of Liaquatabad Town and had completed his MBBS from Sindh Medical College. He also played a vital in the growing ‘City Alliance’. He was closed friend of Afaq Ahmed, chairman of Muhajir Qaumi Movement Haqqiqi, leader of Lyari Amman Committee Uzair Jan Baloch, former home minister Zufiqar Mirza and leaders of nationalist parties. It is believed that Dr Pervaiz was the founder and patron of the emerging City Alliance which would be on the surface in near future. It pertinent to mention here that upcoming political force in shape of City Alliance is being established to counter dominating political party of metropolis Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). It is also believed that the emerging city alliance would create trouble in future and increased the political target killings in the City.Meanwhile, funeral prayer of JI leader was offered at Nomaish Chowrangi where hundreds of JI workers and leaders of various political parties participated. Leaders including Najmi Allam, Saleem Zia, Amir Nawab, Muhammad Hussain Mehanti and other leaders of JI participated in the funeral prayer. The JI workers chanted slogans against the rival political party and demanded the arrest of culprits involved in the murder of slain JI leader. The body of Dr Pervaiz was later moved to the Shah Muhammad Graveyard where he was laid to rest. Lyari Amman Committee has also offered funeral in absentia of the deceased at Maripur Road where scores of Amman Committee activists participated and chanted slogans against the assailants.Aerial firing and violent incidents in retaliation of the killing of JI leader have also been reported in different areas of Karachi including Nagan Chowrangi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Johar and other areas of the city.  The JI has announced to observe a country-wide mourning day, and strike in Karachi against the targeted killing of their party leader.The JI leaders appealed to transporters and traders to keep their businesses shut across the city on Wednesday. They also appealed that educational institutions should also be closed on the strike day.
