KARACHI - Late strike from Imran Khan carried PIA into quarter-finals of NBP National Football Challenge Cup when they registered 2-1 win over Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) in Group-B at Hyderabad on Sunday at HESCO stadium. Imran Khan hit the 86th winner when the match was tied 1-all. Pakistan Army booked their berth in last eight in the same Group when they outclassed Pak Steel 3-0. Pak Steel showed slackness in facing the tough and strong soldiers under intense Hyderabad heat. Two times Champion Army held upper hand throughout the match and striker Imran Hussain, who hit the cross bar in the 26th minute, made amends for his mistimed drive and surged Army ahead on the stroke of half time when midfielder Sarjeel Vickey opened the gate for him to run through and clip the ball in past keeper Najeeb Ul Hassan. Army led 1-0 at interval. Sarjeel Vicky doubled the margin in the 75th minute off corner to make it 2-0 and it was all over when two minutes later left full Muhammad Imran, went on an overlap from defense, to round off the tally. Pak Steel, under Abdul Hafeez, had a dreadful event and suffered their second straight defeat to go out of event. The clash at Latifabad Unit No.2's Hyderabad Public School saw PIA gaining three full points. PIA opened the mission in whirlwind fashion when skipper Nasr Ullah Khan cut loose in the 8th minute after getting pass from striker Shakir Lashari to steer the ball past stranded Ghani. PIA led 1-0 at interval. SSG, under Nawab Karimuddin who was PIA's coach when PIA won the 1984 event at Quetta, went all out in quest of leveler. Lanky substitute striker Asim Faiz within two minutes of his arrival, snatched the equalizer. He controlled the ball after a move from the middle and his 54th minute angular drive hit the left past and rolled back behind Bilal Rafiq. When it seemed the match would end in draw, Imran Khan, former KPT Youth player, did the trick for airliners in the 86th minute.
