LAHORE-Punjab Chief Minister, Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that all resources are being utilised for ensuring provision of best treatment facilities to the common man and provision of free medicines has not only been ensured in the government hospitals but rural and basic health units are also being upgraded for this purpose. He was addressing a high level meeting held in connection with health insurance, here on Friday. MPAs, Dr.Saeed Elahi, Dr.Asad Ashraf, Additional Chief Secretary, Secretary Finance, Secretary Health, Secretary Trade & Investment besides other concerned officers attended the meeting. He said that Punjab Health Insurance Company should be established for provision of best medical facilities to the poor and common man and a special committee comprising experts should be constituted for compiling all details in this regard. The CM said that provision of quality health facilities and basic amenities to the people was responsibility of the government and it was in the process of implementing an effective policy for this purpose. He said that privileged classes were enjoying modern medical facilities whereas poor and common man was facing difficulties in this regard. He said that poor people have as much right on the resources as that of elite and this was the reason that Punjab government had made it priority to the provision of quality treatment facilities to the common man. Shahbaz said that the condition of basic and rural health centers was deplorable and people are facing problems in getting treatment facilities in these health centers. He said that government is taking effective steps for improving the performance of basic and rural health centers and is paying special attention for ensuring presence of doctors and availability of medicines as well as medical equipment in these centers. The CM said that establishment of Health Insurance Company is need of the hour for providing best medical facilities to the common man and it was decided keeping in view this importance. He said that it would be started as a pilot project for 14 lakh poor families benefiting from Food Support Programme and later low paid government employees and other people will benefit from it. He said that not only medical facilities will be available to the common man through health insurance, it will lessen the burden of government hospitals and this can be started as a joint venture in collaboration with private insurance companies. He said that speedy steps should be taken for setting up of Health Insurance Company. He directed Secretary Health to constitute a committee comprising experts which should immediately formulate its recommendations with regard to setting up of Health Insurance Company.
