ISLAMABAD - In the wake of growing security concerns, the United Nations (UN) on Friday enhanced the security measures at its offices in Pakistan and asked the families of foreign staff to leave the country immediately. Well-informed sources confided to TheNation that the decision had been taken in a high-level meeting. The sources maintained that it was decided in the context of deadly suicidal attack in Peshawar that claimed the lives of five UN officials. It is pertinent to mention here that the e-mails circulated from community liaison officers and diplomatic enclave keep directing UN international staff, diplomats and the local Pakistani staff associated with foreign missions and UN to restrict their movement as much as possible. The security level has been enhanced to level III, according to which, families of UN officials have been asked to leave Pakistan immediately. The security level has been currently enhanced to level III, but if the law and order situation doesnt not improve, the UN may take the most emergent measures including the complete shutdown of its operations in Pakistan, an official mentioned.
