PESHAWAR A 24-year-old inmate of Central Jail, Peshawar, died due to police alleged torture here on Sunday, sources said. They said Zafar Khan, son of Gulab, resident of Beribagh, was allegedly killed by police torture. He had been imprisoned for 15 days under a drugs smuggling case, they said. They said the police called the relatives of Zafar saying his he had heart failure inside the jail adding that when they (Zafars relatives) came to the jail they observed that Zafar was killed due to severe physical torture. The relatives of the deceased blocked the road near the Central Jail and demanded immediate arrest of the jails superintend. They chanted full-throated slogans against Peshawar police and said that Zafar Khan was under trial in Peshawar lower court. Talking to The Nation, Nasir, uncle of Zafar, said the post mortem report proved that Zafar was killed by police torture. He said there were visible signs of torture on his neck, foot and chest, which were a sufficient proof of police brutality. The brother of Zafar Khan admitted that his brother used drugs however he said it was injustice that police killed him. He accused that police forced him to sign a white paper in which it was written that in future I would not claim any responsibility of my brothers death against police. After one hour of the protest police came to the site and negotiated with Zafars family and opened the road. According to police, Zafar Khan had been detained in jail for the last 15 days and had died his natural death. A police official said that Zafar died last night without however he was a user of hashish and police did not torture him.
