WASHINGTON

The first consignment of 3,500 Kg of Pakistani “Sindhri” mangoes, a top variety of the king of fruits, has arrived at Houston, Texas amid reports of a good public response.

Currently, the mangoes from the first consignment are being marketed at stores in Houston, Austin and Dallas, the Pakistani embassy said on Thursday in a press release. More consignments of mangoes were expected to arrive at Houston in two weeks.

The retail price of the 2.5 kg mango pack is $25, which has been termed as fair, considering the superior quality of Pakistani mangoes, which are famous for their fragrance and sweet juice, the embassy said. The US is a favoured destination for mango exporters, where there is considerable demand for delicious Pakistani mangoes.

Pakistan’s Ambassador in Washington, Jalil Abbas Jilani, welcomed this initiative by Farm House Exports (Pvt) Ltd. at Karachi and Famous Foods Products at Houston in bringing Pakistani mangoes to the United States, which is in line with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s policy of diversification of exports to the American market. The ambassador urged other mango exporters to follow suit, and assured them of maximum facilitation by the Embassy of Pakistan and Consulates in the United States. He expressed appreciation to the US Department of Agriculture for allowing additional irradiation facilities in the US which will allow the expansion of market area for Pakistani mangoes.
