PESHAWAR (APP) - Provincial Minister for Agriculture Arbab Muhammad Ayub Jan on Wednesday said that the province would need no import of wheat as for the first time 6,248 metric tons quality wheat seed has been produced and the province has gained self-sufficiency in the crop. He was presiding over a high level meeting at his office here, attended by Secretary Agriculture Afsaran Khan, Additional Secretary Israr Khan, DG Agriculture Tasleem Jan and other officers. The meeting was told that for the current year 30000 metric tons wheat seeds were estimated by the Agriculture Department while its expected cultivation was estimated on 1.8 million acres land. For 'Khareef' crop, the department has 100 tons seeds of potatoes while six tons of different vegetable seeds would be available to the farmers. The meeting also discussed in detail enhancing production of corn crop and introduction of new breed of corn especially in Malakand and Hazara divisions. The minister highly appreciated efforts of the Agriculture Department and directed officials to keep a vigil eye on seeds provided by the private seeds companies and blacklist those indulged in business of substandard seeds in the market. NOC from the Agriculture Department be made mandatory for private companies, he said and added that the companies must be bounded for supplying different kinds of corn seeds for an area of 100000 acres in Hazara and Malakand divisions next year. The minister directed the officials of Agriculture Department to compile a complete record of all kinds of wheat seeds being provided to different districts of the province and strictly check the black-marketing of certified seeds of the department. He said vegetable seeds must be provided to all nurseries and research stations without any discrimination while provision of saplings of different fruit plants should also be ensured. Our aim was to make the province self-sufficient in the field of Agriculture so that it may not face any problem related to food items.
