LAHORE - Opposition on Friday staged a protest sit-in outside the Punjab Assembly against barring six MPAs from entering the assembly building by the Chair.

These six PML-N members were accused of creating raucous and ugly scenes in the house during the presentation of budget. And the speaker banned their entry on October 16.

However, Leader of the Opposition in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehhaz Sharif rejected the charge and said that he would not join the session unless the restriction on his party colleagues was lifted.

Talking to the media at the protest site, he bashed Punjab Speaker Ch Pervez Elahi and dubbed him as a ‘policeman who is out to oppress the opposition members’.

As the budget session started the PML-N members started making noise and raising slogans that hampered the proceedings.

Some of them even roughed up staff members and broke the mikes. The agitated protesters also destroyed chairs and podium.

The lawmakers whose entry is banned are Pir Ashraf Rasool, Malik Muhammad Waheed, Muhammad Yaseen Amir, Mirza Javed, Zaibun Nisa and Tariq Masih Gill. They were also issued show-cause notice.

Hamza called for constituting a house committee to probe into the issue as he questioned the authenticity of the official photo showing unruly scene in the assembly on that day, calling the picture fake.

The PML-N leader also took serious exception to the speaker’s remarks made about women members on the budget day.

Hamza, who is son of PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif, alleged that the speaker had reached the Speaker Office through stealing votes of his party.

Ch Pervez Elahi committed a dacoity on the money of the Bank of Punjab and changed the ring-road project, but unfortunately such a person was calling the PML-N leaders thieves and looters.

He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz returned to the Punjab Assembly only for the sake of protecting democracy but the attitude of the government towards it was still not welcoming.

The PML-N has been protesting against the rigging in the general elections and now they were confronted with the Speaker who stole their votes, he added.

Hamza warned they would not let the House function if the speaker and the treasury members did not mend their ways and stop victimisation of the opposition members.

He said Imran Khan would describe Chaudhry brothers [Pervez Elahi and Shujaat Hussain] looters but he has now made PML-Q leader speaker of the provincial assembly.

Addressing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Hamza pleaded innocence of his father and former chief minister Shehbaz Sharif in Ashiana Housing project.

He said the opposition wanted to protest against NAB action against an “innocent person”, who served the province selflessly without caring his ill health, but they were denied their democratic and constitutional right.

It all happened due to the speaker who is playing the role of a policeman in the assembly instead of the custodian, Hamza alleged.

He said Pervez Elahi is a person whose first Quaid was Nawaz Sharif but later he picked up Pervez Musharraf as his mentor.
