ISLAMABAD - Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has been elected unopposed as the Chairman of the Public Account Committee (PAC). The election for the Chairman PAC was held Friday in the Parliament House and was conducted by the Secretary National Assembly Karamat Hussain Niazi. The name of Ch Nisar Ali Khan for the slot was proposed by MNA Asfandyar Wali and was seconded by MNA Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada. Speaking on the occasion Ch Nisar said that election of the Chairman PAC has taken place just according to the Charter of Democracy (CoD) signed by the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif. He said the chairmanship of PAC was a great honour and responsibility and he would try his best to come up to the expectations of the members and the nation. He assured that accountability would be across the board and beyond party affiliation. He said the members would have to do extra work to dispose of the backlog. He underlined greater role for the sub-committees of the PAC. Members of the committee assured the Chairman of their complete cooperation. Members of the PAC who attended the meeting included MNAs Ch Imtiaz Safdar Waraich, Mrs Rukhsana Bangash, Mir Hazar Khan Bijrani, Tasneem Ahmed Qureshi, Nawabzada Malik Ahmad Khan, Khwaja Muhammad Asif, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Zahid Hamid, Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Sardar Bahadur Ahmed Khan Sihar, Hamid Yar Hiraj, Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi, Asfandyar Wali and Asiya Nasir. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani congratulated Ch Nisar on his unopposed election as Chairman PAC. He hoped that Nisar would effectively cope with the new responsibilities with sheer dedication. The Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza and the Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi also congratulated Ch Nisar. In their separate congratulatory messages, the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker said that PAC was an important body of the Parliament that was responsible for maintaining a constant oversight of the public spending, besides being an important tool of parliamentary accountability. They said the election of Ch Nisar was according to the Charter of Democracy and the government had set a good democratic practice by electing the Leader of the Opposition as a Chairman PAC. They said that Ch Nisar was a seasoned politician and under his leadership the committee would work more actively.
