ABU DHABI - Dubai announced a three day mourning period after the 33-year-old son of the Gulf emirate’s ruler passed away, the official state news agency WAM said on Saturday.

Sheikh Rashid was the first son of Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid al-Maktoum and his senior wife, Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma al-Maktoum.

The United Arab Emirates state news agency WAM said Saturday that he died of a heart attack.

Sheikh Rashid was the eldest son of Sheikh Mohammad. Rashid’s brother Sheikh Hamdan is the Crown Prince of Dubai. Sheikh Rashid was an avid sportsman and horse racing enthusiast.

He was laid to rest at the Umm Hurair cemetery in Al Fahidi area, Bur Dubai, after a grand funeral procession. Funeral prayers were offered after Maghrib (sunset) prayers at Zabeel Mosque. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed deep sorrow over the sad demise of Sheikh Rashid. Nawaz prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and commiserated with the people and the government of UAE in this hour of grief.

UAE President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered a 3-day official mourning following the death of Shaikh Rashid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Flags will remain at half-mast during the 3-day mourning period. Government departments, however, will continue to function during this period.

“We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return,” the Dubai Ruler Court said as it mourned Shaikh Rashid’s death on Saturday. Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and Shaikh Rashid’s brother, expressed his sadness on Twitter and Instagram. “Today, I lost a best friend and a childhood companion. My dear brother Rashid you will be missed,” Shaikh Hamdan said in a message posted on the social media sites.
