This note is in response to Dr Yakub Bhatti's letter on the term of the CJP that appeared on July 18, 2013. I totally disagree with his idea of extension for life for CJP and other Judges of the Supreme Court. Like all other servants of the state, CJP should go home at the end of his term. We struggled for his restoration but now we will not allow his extension.

There is a petition in SC for 18 months extension to compensate for the period that he was rendered non-functional. Such individual-centred initiatives are lethal for institutions. The case of USA is totally different, there was no constitutional amendment, and the founding fathers envisioned such a court. We have different traditions in this part of the world and the 1973 constitution has laid down a procedure which must be followed for the supremacy of rule of law.

Let 2013 be a year of change: (Chief Justice, Chief of Army Staff, President all must go home). The civil society will not allow any exceptions; we have had enough of this high drama. A fresh start has to be made.

DR FARID MALIK,

Lahore, July 18.
