Three more measles patients died at a local hospital on Monday, taking the overall death toll in the City to 58. So far 81 children have died of measles in the province.

Muhammad Javed, 2, Muhammad Imran. 2, and Shahzeb, six months, breathed their last at Children’s Hospital. As many as 62 more patients were admitted to different hospitals in the City on Monday.

On Saturday, five cases of measles were reported at Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) in Rawalpindi and BBH Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Asif Qadir Mir said the situation was not alarming as five to four cases were reported on daily basis as compared to eight few months back.

Dr Javed Hayat, spokesperson Holy Family, when contacted, said that the situation was getting better due to our timely action. However, he held parents responsible for the disease saying, "Parents are also responsible for the disease as they do not complete the course and then blame us."

However, resenting over inadequate anti-measles measures, the Lahore High Court has observed kids have been dying of the disease showing negligence on the part of Punjab Health Department.

“It is a matter of life and the court can’t be silent. “Why deaths are not being stopped if precautionary measures have been adopted?” the LHC observed while hearing a petition moved by Judicial Activism Panel Chairman Advocate Azhar Siddique seeking judicial inquiry over the menace.

The court summoned the medical superintendents of Jinnah Hospital, Mayo Hospital and Services Hospital on the next date of hearing to explain the reasons for the deaths.
