Prime Minister Justice (r) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso has directed the Finance Ministry to immediately release Rs22.5 billion to the Water and Power Ministry for provision of fuel to the thermal power plants to overcome the electricity crisis in the country.

The direction was given by the prime minister while chairing an emergency meeting at the PM House on Monday.

According to a statement, the prime minister decided that the Finance Ministry would forthwith release Rs15 billion for provision of fuel while Rs7.5 billion would be released subsequently.

He said that his government was committed to assuage the sufferings of the people and to maintain the wheels of industry in motion.

He directed the ministries of Water and Power, Finance and Petroleum to maintain close liaison and ensure maximum power generation to minimise loadshedding.

Talking to the media, Water and Power Minister Dr Musadik Malik claimed that power generation would increase to 12,000 megawatts from 10,000 megawatts after the provision of Rs22.5 billion. He said that the Finance Ministry would immediately release the amount to control the long hours of power outages. The government would restore the supply chain of electricity after getting additional funds, he added.

The minister said that gas supply from Qadirpur field was suspended that created shortage of 800 megawatts of electricity. On subsidy, Dr Malik said that it should be targeted.

The meeting was attended by water and power, petroleum and natural resources ministers and PM’s advisor on finance, besides principal secretary to the prime minister, secretaries of finance, water and power and petroleum and Wapda chairman.
