The amount of agricultural loans during the first four months of the current fiscal year increased by 16 percent. State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said that the commercial and specialized banks during July-October current fiscal year on the whole disbursed loans amounting to Rs57.60 billion, while last year in the same period, it valued at Rs49.56 billion and thus, recorded an increase by 16 percent. Five major banks, Habib, Allied, MCB, National and United on the whole disbursed loans amounting to Rs12 billion, while Agriculture Development Bank Rs26.86 billion, Punjab Prudential Cooperative Rs880 million and other 14 private banks issued loans aggregating to Rs13 billion. Experts said that the price-hikes in fertilizer, seeds, machinery and fuel stimulated the increasing trend in borrowing from banks by the peasants.
