ISLAMABAD - The government is aggressively pursuing implementation of the core human rights instruments concerning children, said Samina Khalid Ghurki, Federal Minister for Social Welfare and Special Education, while addressing a press conference, here on Thursday. The press briefing was organised by Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education to announce the launch of National Campaign against child abuse on the eve of Universal Children Day, observed on November 20th. The Minister said that Pakistan has ratified United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and is also one of the six initiators of the World Summit for Children. "Apart from that, Pakistan has signed several other international instruments that shows Pakistan's determination to cooperate with international community on global issues," she stated, mentioning that leading international conventions signed by Pakistan include Stockholm Convention and Agenda for Action, Millennium Development Goals, World Fit for Children, Yokohama Global Commitment and SAARC Regional Conventions on preventing women and children from trafficking and prostitution. Samina said that Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education is committed to children welfare and development. "Through the National Commission for Child Welfare and Development (NCCWD), the Ministry has submitted three periodic reports on implementation of childrens' rights in Pakistan to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child", she added. Elaborating on the progress that Ministry has made regarding the rights of children, Samina Khalid said that the Ministry has promulgated Juvenile Justice System Ordinance, which fulfils all the requirements of international standards. Moreover, Ministry of Social Welfare prepared National Plan of Action through a PSDP-funded project, mentioned the Federal Minister. She announced that Child Protection Policy has been drafted and would be submitted for the approval of Federal cabinet soon. "In the area of legislation, provisions of 78 laws related to children have been reviewed and compiled," she revealed. The Federal Minister of Social Welfare and Special Education said that government of Pakistan is fully aware of the fact that children's protection from violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect is the least focussed area in Pakistan. Keeping this in view, Child Protection Information and Management System has been established by NCCWD in collaboration with UNICEF to strengthen children rights in the country, she informed. The Minister asserted that launch of National Campaign against Child Abuse demonstrates governmental resolve to weed out children's exploitation from the very roots of Pakistani society. "This campaign would raise the level of awareness upon children issues and would also become instrumental in invoking high level of social responsibility among masses," she argued. Earlier, a function was organised by Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education to celebrate the Universal Children Day at National Library's Auditorium. Samina Khalid Ghurki was the Chief Guest at the ceremony while Secretary of the Ministry, G M Sikander and other prominent personalities were also present during the occasion. A large number of children from different schools of twin cities, along with special children attended the event.
