Total polio cases in the country rose to 166 in 2014, as two fresh cases surfaced in Bara and Peshawar areas amidst the start of drive in which 0.7 million children would be immunised in 97 union councils of Peshawar.

The National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad has confirmed the two new cases on Saturday. The first polio victim child is Salma (16) daughter of Abdul Wajid, resident of Sheen Kamar, village Sawey Kot Mairo Dera, Tirah area of Tehsil Bara Khyber Agency.

The second victim child is Habiba (08) daughter of Subhan Ullah, resident of Union Council Suleman Khel, village Gharibabad, town No-04, Peshawar.

However, KP Expanded Programme for Immunisation has planned a one day anti-polio campaign in 97 union councils of Peshawar and during which some 7, 54,000 would immunised. An EPI official informed that for this purpose, 2,400 teams will visit door-to-door and they will administer polio vaccine to children.
