ISLAMABAD - Pakistan's lone international player Aisamul Haq Qureshi helped Pakistan win the second reverse singles to give Pakistan 3-2 victory in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group-II final against Chinese Taipei at neutral venue of Izmir, Turkey on Sunday.

The final was tied at 2-2 after Pakistan's longest serving No 1 Aqeel Khan lost five-set marathon reverse singles against C Wang.

Aqeel won the first set 7-6, but lost the second set 2-6 and third 6-7, but bounced back in the fourth set winning it 6-1 but again lost the fifth and decisive set 3-6.

It was all left on Aisam to pull off victory and take Pakistan into Davis Cup Group-I. Aisam played against Jui Chen Hung. He was in supreme form and won the first set 7-6 in tiebreak. It was see saw battle, which went right down to the wire, before Aisam took the set 7-6. The second set was almost identical to the first as both the players played superb tennis, before Aisam lost 4-6.

Aisam was fully aware of the threat, if he allowed Hung any chance, it could spell disaster, so Aisam played mind-blowing and error-free tennis. He was simply outstanding and won the third set 6-4. Things were looking very good for Pakistan, as Aisam continued his brilliant form and played powerful volleys down the line, his serve was also very good, he kept his opponent on the run and won the fourth set 6-3.

Talking to The Nation from Izmir, Aqeel said: “Soon after Aisam registered the second reverse singles triumph, wild celebrations were broken out in Pakistan camp. I don't have words to explain my feelings, as it's like dream come true for us. After a long gap, we have finally made it to the Group-I.”

Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) patron Senator Dilawar Abbas, president Salim Saifullah Khan and the entire tennis fraternity have congratulated Aisam and other team members for this historic victory.
