LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that institutions concerned should remain fully alert in view of possible flood and rivers situation should also be monitored round the clock.

He issued these instructions in a video conference with the Cabinet Committee on Flood and administrations of various districts at Civil Secretariat, here Sunday. The system of recent rains and the possible flood situation was reviewed in detail in the meeting.

He said that protective arrangements should be completed in the districts threatened by flood and immediate evacuation of the population should be ensured in case of need.

The chief minister directed that all institutions should finalise arrangements to cope with any situation arising due to recent rains. He said that there should be proper arrangements for food, medicines and fodder for livestock in the concerned districts and the relevant institutions should work with mutual coordination. He said that the situation caused by recent rains should be closely watched and protective spurs and embankments should be strengthened.

Shahbaz Sharif further directed that in order to check illegal breaches, police should closely work with the administration and take indiscriminate action against the elements involved. He said that the Cabinet Committee on Flood should ensure immediate implementation of the decisions to cope with the possible flood situation and warned that no laxity will be tolerated in this regard. He said that protective arrangements should be effective and comprehensive in every respect and boats, dewatering sets and necessary equipments should be in working order. The chief minister further directed that advance preparation should be made with regard to the possible flood in floodwater channels of Gujranwala Division.

He said that there is a need for effective coordination between concerned provincial and federal institutions and they should maintain a close contact and exchange latest information in the light of which necessary measures should be adopted. Issuing instructions for assigning responsibilities to ministers and secretaries in the districts to be affected in case of possible flood, the chief minister said that provincial ministers and secretaries should review protective arrangements and preparations in the districts allocated to them.

He said that timely provision of machinery and equipment should be ensured in case of any emergent situation and the control room should function round the clock. Secretary Irrigation gave a briefing on the water situation in rivers while DG PDMA informed about protective arrangements and availability of necessary equipments.

Director General Meteorological Department informed about weather situation during next few days. Provincial Ministers, Chief Secretary and concerned authorities participated in the meeting from Civil Secretariat Lahore while Commissioners and District Coordination Officers of the concerned districts attended from their respective areas through video link.

Meanwhile, President of a prominent Chinese company in energy sector, Yu Yong met Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, yesterday.

Pace of progress on the solar project at Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park Bahawalpur under CPEC was discussed in the meeting.

The chief minister said that China is a very reliable and sincere friend of Pakistan. He said that China is playing a commendable role in the development of various sectors in the country and the people of Pakistan highly value the cooperation and friendship of China.

He said that China has proved to be a true friend of Pakistan by helping it overcome energy crisis. He said that CPEC projects are an invaluable gift to Pakistan by the Chinese President and the government.

Shahbaz Sharif said that people of Pakistan and their future generations will never forget the historic economic package of China. He said that under CPEC, investment of 33 billion dollars is being made only in energy projects. He said that a solar project of 100 megawatts with Chinese investment under CPEC will be completed next month while several projects will be producing energy till 2017.

He said that a number of Chinese companies are working in Pakistan and Pak-China friendship has turned into strong economic cooperation. He said that the economic package of billions of dollars given by China to Pakistan augurs well for a bright economic future of the country. He said that every effort will be made for the early completion of the projects under CPEC.

Shahbaz Sharif said that people of the whole region including Pakistan will benefit from CPEC projects. He said that lakhs of new job opportunities will be created with the launching of various projects Pakistan with the investment of China.

The chief minister said that implementation of Chinese economic package will usher in an era of progress and prosperity in the country. He said that no compromise will be made on the standard and transparency of the projects.

He asked the Chinese company to further accelerate the work on the power plant of solar project. President of the Chinese energy company Yu Yong said that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ensured transparency, speed and a high standard in the implementation of projects which is highly commendable.

He said that people of Punjab are fully benefiting from the practical measures and the development projects executed by the Chief Minister.
