LAHORE  - Commuters of the capital of Punjab claim that the city is spreading speedily but that bus routes remain the same which is adding to problems.

Residents on Monday approached TheNation to share transport problems that they face every day. As per their complaint, dozens of housing societies have been established in South Lahore during past years but transport managers look in no mood to introduce more transport.

Despite availability of more than 500 buses, hundreds of vehicles, many motorcycle-rickshaws and three-wheeler rickshaws, a big population in major portion of the City especially in South Lahore are facing serious troubles to find a better mode of public transport.

The Lahore Transport Company (LTC) which monitors and regulates public transport has failed to address issues even after four years of its establishment.

The residents of Ghazi Chowk Township, Wapda Town, Punjab Society, NFC Society, Gulshan Lahore, Valencia, Tariq Garden, Awasia, BOR Society, UET Society, Nashaman Iqbal, Jhuggi Shahabuddin, Naz Town, Doctors’ Society, DHA Rehbar Sector, Bhubtyan and adjacent villages have almost no public transport to cater their needs. They either hire rickshaws or travel on their own vehicles to reach at destinations. The situation is not different for residents of the Kahnakasha, IEP Town, PCSIR and Khayaban-e-Amin. Residents suggested that Daewoo Route number 10 should be initiated and concluded at Khayaban-e-Jinnah. Commuters have to hire costly rickshaws or taxies to reach at the last stop of Daewoo at Rehmat Chowk from the said societies.

Earlier, private company’s buses went to Valencia and other buses at route number H4 travelled through Wapda Town giving benefit to residents of Nashamen Iqbal, Jhuggi Shahabuddin and adjacent societies, but now said route was abolished and only a single bus goes to Rehmat Chowk Wapda Town. A commuter needs hours to reach the Railways Station Lahore from Rehmat Town.

It have been suggested that new routes should be introduced from Khayban-e-Amin to Railways Station and other bus terminals in such a way that the residents of the societies are benefited. Similarly, new routes are needed from Akbar Chowk to Khayaban-e-Amin and from Khayaban-e-Amin to Allama Iqbal Airport via Valencia, Wapda Town, Township and Model Town.

The residents suggested routes from Khayban-e-Amin to Railways Station and Airport via Valencia, Wapda Town and BOR which also touches main colleges, Punjab University and main hospitals.

Separate buses for females, students and children are also need of the hour, they say. All societies have been asked to establish a public fund to introduce their own public transport for the residents. Similarly, they requested societies to introduce transport facility to take a dead-body from home to graveyard.

Railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique has been requested to approve stoppage of all express trains at Kahnakasha as much effort is required to reach at the stop from Lahore Railways Station.
