LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said the relations between Pakistan and America should be based on mutual confidence and respect.

Addressing American President Day function at American Consulate Thursday, the chief minister said that general elections were going to be held in near future and people of Pakistan would give a new mandate with the power of vote.

Speaking on the occasion, American Senate Committee for Foreign Affairs Chairman Senator Robert Menendez said America gave great importance to its relations with Pakistan.

He said Pakistan was an important country of the region. American Ambassador Richard Olson also addressed the function.

Later, the chief minister along with Robert Menendez, Richard Olson and Consul General Nena Maria cut a cake of President Day function. Diplomats, parliamentarians, industrialists, businessmen and other high dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Peace: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has called for establishing a close coordination of ulema and mushaikh of all schools of thought to promote tolerance and brotherhood.

Presiding over a meeting on law and order situation at Model Town Thursday, the chief minister said peace was essential for rapid development and promotion of economic activities therefore all out efforts should be made for maintaining law and order.

The CM asked for further improving mutual coordination between the police and the law enforcement agencies. He said extremist elements were weakening foundations of the country and there was a need to promote the culture of religious tolerance and restraint.

Shahbaz said police should perform its responsibilities efficiently to control crime. He said an effective action should be taken for apprehending the criminals involved in heinous crimes and such cases should be investigated on scientific basis.
