LAHORE A special package was announced for the provision of top quality essential items to the people at concessionary rates during Ramzan-ul-Mubarak at a high level meeting presided over by Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif here on Thursday. 20kg atta bag would be available for Rs 415, and 10kg for Rs 210 in 325 Ramzan Bazars, while 20kg atta bag will be sold in the open market for Rs.440 and 10 kg for Rs.220. The meeting also decided to evolve a comprehensive monitoring system for stability of prices during the holy month and a cabinet committee was constituted for this purpose, which will review prices and supply of essential items throughout the province on daily basis. Addressing the meeting, the CM said arrangements had been finalised for the supply of daily use items to the people at concessionary rate. He stressed upon the traders community to cooperate with the government in supplying quality essential items. He also said legitimate profit was the right of businessmen, but no one would be allowed to exploit the masses. Issuing instructions for formation of monitoring committees within 48 hours throughout the province, he said these committees would maintain a watchful eye on the prices of essential commodities. He said atta, ghee, pulses, vegetables and fruits would also be provided in Ramzan Bazars at reduced prices and their quality will also be ensured. He directed Chief Secretary to negotiate with the Sugar Mills Association regarding supply of sugar and ensure that sugar was available in abundance at the fixed rates in Ramzan Bazars. He said that 460 Ramzan Dasterkhawans were set up last year while the number had been increased to 550 this year. Appreciating the project of model bazaars, the CM said it would not only result in availability of quality items to the masses, but necessary facilities would also be made available in these bazaars. He appreciated the performance of MNA Muhammad Afzal Khokhar, commissioners and DCOs regarding establishment of model bazaars and said model bazaars would be set up in all districts of the province under a phased programme. He directed Minister and Secretary Food to ensure availability of quality atta in Ramzan Bazaars and open market and select such flour mills for this purpose, which had good reputation. He said mechanical tandoors should also be utilised for Ramzan Dasterkhawans and it should be ensured that all mechanical tandoors were in working condition. He directed that an effective publicity campaign should also be launched regarding Ramzan package and banners should be prominently displayed at Ramzan bazaars, Dasterkhawans and fair price shops and atta at concessionary rate should be provided in Ramzan bazaars and open market in the bags of specific colour. He directed Home Secretary to make foolproof security arrangements at Ramzan bazaars. Earlier, Secretary Industries Dr Shujaat Ali gave a detailed briefing regarding provision of daily use items to the people in Ramzan Bazaars at concessionary rates. He said the negotiations were also being held with poultry association and ghee mills owners for acquiring these items at reduced prices and efforts are being made for getting maximum discount. He said all district administrations had finalised arrangements and model bazaars had been completed in Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Rawalpindi and Lahore which would be inaugurated before Ramzan.
