ISLAMABAD - The formal announcement of Fata Olympic Association (FOA), with the Federal Minister for Sports Engineer Shaukat Ullah as its president and Noor Aslam Khan as first vice president, has been made. In an exclusive interview with TheNation on Tuesday, Noor Aslam said: "I had been the best athlete of KP for seven consecutive years and was the best athlete of Peshawar Board, Pakistan Board, Peshawar University and Pakistan University in 400m, 800m and 1500m hurdles race champion." He said he was also the general secretary of Fata Rugby Association (FRA) and was awarded the Governor's gold medal for being the record holder of Peshawar Board Athletics. Noor Aslam played key role in setting up of Fata Olympic Association. He said the association was the frontline area against war on terrorism and needed special government attention. Noor, who has also represented Pakistan rugby team against India in Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad and Islamabad, said there was tremendous talent in the tribal belt and with proper exposure and guidance Pakistan could produce players from this region in almost all the sporting fields. Noor has appealed to the Federal Government and Federal Sports Minister to give special attention to this area and establish a committee comprising the area people who had completed knowledge of the players of the region. He said this could help not only the youth of the area but also the country get world-class players and regain the past glory. He demanded of the KP Sports Minister to take personal interest in the well being of players who gave everything to the country and after serving for so long in the later stage of their lives they were looking for sources to run their day-to-day affairs. Noor demanded of the KP government to set up a fund for the past 'greats' and announce a reasonable stipend for the families of players who passed their peak. The sportspersons deserved better treated as they did to the country and its people, he concluded. MOHSIN ALI
