OUR STAFF REPORTER ISLAMABAD - The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Tuesday announced that one per cent reduction in General Sales Tax and elimination of Special Excise Duty on imports would be effective from June 20 against July 1 in order to facilitate the trade and industry. The federal government in annual budget 2011-12 has announced to reduce the GST rate by one per cent ie. 17 to 16 per cent and also decided to eliminate the Special Excise Duty in order to facilitate the trade and industry and to reduce the burden of indirect taxation. The FBR Tuesday announced that these two measures would be effective from June 20 against the outset of new financial year July 2011. Consequently, there will be no special excise duty on imports and the rate of sales tax on imported goods shall be 16 per cent with effect from 20.06.2011. It might be mentioned here that 1pc reduction in GST would cause Rs 35b to the FBR in the upcoming financial year 2011-12.
