AUCKLAND (AFP) Team New Zealand completed a 2-0 clean sweep over Mascalzone Latino in a shortened Louis Vuitton Trophy yachting regatta final here Sunday. After winning the first race by 12 seconds on Saturday, skipper Dean Barker and his crew cruised to a 56sec win in race two against the Italian entry, skippered by New Zealander Gavin Brady. The final was originally scheduled to be a best-of-five but was reduced to best-of-three when light winds delayed the start of racing. After losing race one on Saturday, Mascalzone fought hard to stay in the contest in the second race and the two boats were bow-to-bow as they approached the top mark on the first beat. But Team NZ held the inside line, which allowed them to round the mark ahead and from there they controlled proceedings. The result was a satisfying one for Team NZ, who were beaten by another Italian crew, Azzurra, in the final of the inaugural Louis Vuitton Trophy event in France last November. More Louis Vuitton Trophy regattas are due to be held in Sardinia in May, Dubai in November and Hong Kong in January next year. The match-racing series, with crews using identical Americas Cup Class yachts built for the 2007 regatta in Valencia, aims to provide top quality Americas Cup-style racing during the long gap between the contests.
