LAHORE - Ajoka Theatre left for Amritsar yesterday to participate and perform in the Punjab Natshala Festival to be kicked off in Indian Punjab’s city Amritsar from Tuesday (today).

The Ajoka team will perform its famous play ‘Kaun hai Yeh Gustakh’ at the Punjab Natshala on the inaugurating day. Punjab Natshala Festival is being held in connection with weeklong celebrations of World Theatre Day (March 27).

The play is based on the life and short stories of Saadat Hassan Manto, the play will first ever time is being performed in Amritsar which is also a Manto’s place of birth.

Play ‘Kaun hai Yeh Gustakh’ is written by Shahid Nadeem and directed by Madeeha Gauhar. Shahid Nadeem of Ajoka Theatre said the play focuses on events in Manto’s life after his migration to Pakistan in 1949 because of family pressures and his disillusionment at the Hind-Muslim tensions in Bombay which had affected the atmosphere of the Bombay film industry.

The cast of the play includes Usman Raaj, Uzma Kharal, Kamran Mujahid, Nayab Faiza, Shehzad sadie, Mehran, Aamir Sahotra, Sohail Tariq, Qaiser Khan, and Fahad Qureshi. The play has already been performed in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi and New Delhi. Punjab Natshala Festival is become a platform where worldwide theatre groups have been participated and showcase their talent and get learn from other’s theatre groups performances.

Jatinder Brar of Punjab Natshala said to an English newspaper, “We started the festival with aim to promote theatre groups performances among masses in the city of Amritsar.”
