ISLAMABAD - Fulfilling his promise with Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob Khan Nasir to accommodate him after his defeat in Senate elections on general seat from Balochistan last year, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif fielded him on the vacant Senate seat from the federal capital and he would likely enter the Upper House unopposed as no other candidate has filed nomination papers with the Election Commission.

After getting the party’s ticket, Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir submitted his nomination papers with the Election Commission of Pakistan. Sardar Yaqoob was the sole candidate to file nomination papers with the ECP so he would be declared elected on the seat unopposed.

Sources in the ruling PML-N informed that after scrutiny of the aspirants for the party ticket against the vacant Senate seat from the federal capital, a list of around 10 candidates was submitted to the Prime Minister and he picked the name of Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir, with whom the Premier had made commitment after his defeat in Senate elections from Balochistan as some party MPAs had not cast vote to him.

The Senate seat was vacated from the federal capital by Iqbal Zafar Jhagra as he was made Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Sources in the party recalled that at the time of Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir’s defeat in the Senate elections from Balochistan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had taken strong notice of it and even directed the party’s provincial chapter to hold inquiry into the matter as to how the central leader of the party was defeated on otherwise sure-fire seat due to betrayal of some of the party MPAs who had not cast vote in favour of party’s candidate.

Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir was also dejected and annoyed with this betrayal of his Baloch party MPs and expressed his concerns over it to the Prime Minister as well. Premier Sharif had assured Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir that he would definitely be accommodated at appropriate time, as he (PM) valued his services for the party in high esteem.

Another source in the party informed that as the Prime Minister wanted to strengthen the party Balochistan chapter that was the reason he had picked Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir for the vacant seat of Senate from Islamabad.

Sources in the party informed that among other contenders the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Law Aushtar Aousaf and his Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz were strong contenders for the party’s ticket but the Prime Minister decided in favour of Sardar Yaqoob .

According to Election Commission of Pakistan, scrutiny of the nomination papers shall take place today and as there is no other candidate in the run for the slot Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasir would be declared successful unopposed in case his nomination papers are found in order.

Although Pakistan People’s Party has sought applications for the Senate vacant seat from Islamabad but later the party decided not to field its candidate on the seat which would definitely go to ruling party because of their convincing majority in the National Assembly, the electoral college of Senate seats from the federal capital.

More or less with the same considerations Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf has not shown any interest in the elections.
