LAHORE - Much to the embarrassment of Punjab Governor Sardar Latif Ahmad Khan Khosa, misuse of his letterhead by his advisers to get undue benefits in the governors name seems to have become so common that Mr Khosa had to sack one of his advisors on late Monday night when he was told that Irfan Alvi (adviser) had tried to get three Blackberry handsets from a cellular company using his letterhead. As per details, Alvi wrote a letter to the Regional Manager Corporate Sales, ZONG, that the governor and his aides needed three Blackberry handsets along with three platinum numbers of all the same digits. He also attached a copy of his ID card along with the governors letterhead for necessary transfers procedure and record. Interestingly, the Governors Secretariat came to know of the development when the cellular company sent the letter for verification. The officials noticed it had been written by the media consultant to the governor on the latters letterhead in violation of rules. It may be noted here that advisors to the governor are not authorised to use his letterhead to communicate with any authority or organisation. Besides, they are not entitled to have any perks or privileges as they are supposed to work in honorary capacity. Later, when a senior official called Alvi in his office to know if he had actually written the letter, he reportedly admitted having done so; but justified his act saying since the CEO of the said cellular company had pledged to gift three Blackberry handsets to the governor, he had actually sent a reminder to the regional manger of the company to send the gadgets. When contacted to know his version, Irfan Alvi said he would call back in few minutes, but he did not. He was contacted again for comments, but he was not available despite repeated calls on his cell phone and text messages. Spokesperson for the governor, Ishtiaq Amin, when contacted to know the official version said Alvi had written the letter in his personal capacity and the Governors Secretariat and the governor had nothing to do with it. He said the matter was also brought into the notice of the governor who had immediately sacked his advisor and ordered inquiry to probe the matter. He further told this scribe that legal action would also be taken against Alvi who misused the governors letterhead in violation of rules. Earlier, another advisor to the governor was also caught in a similar controversy when a notification regarding appointment of another advisor was reportedly issued by Zahid Bashir on the governors letterhead. Nobody, including Bashir, was ready to own that notification regarding 'appointment of Ishrat Saqib as advisor to the governor on matters of 'Trade and Business Coordination. The governors spokesperson had expressed ignorance about the controversial notification, saying it was not part of the official record. Zahid Bashir, who also served as press secretary to Prime Minister Gilani for some time, then told this scribe that the matter of Ishrat Saqibs appointment as advisor to the governor was under consideration for quite some time in the past, and he had also asked a typist to type the draft. But it was later decided not to appoint that person as advisor and the draft notification was never signed by the competent authority. Of late, there were reports that Zahid Bashir misused his authority and got a case registered against his tailor who reportedly failed to supply the stitched garments to him on the given date. He also took the matter to the court. Later, the governor intervened and the two parties agreed to end the dispute as a result of 'out of the court settlement.
