RAWALPINDI - A low-intensity firework blast soon after President Mamnoon Hussain’s convoy passed by the traffic headquarters building rattled the security personnel guarding the route.

The building of Rescue 15, Traffic Headquarters, is situated a few hundred yards away from Armed Forces Institute of Ophthalmology (AFIO), Military Hospital (MH). The president visited the hospital for check-up of his eyes and the blast occurred soon after his departure. The law-enforcement agencies could not arrest the culprit who committed this crime.

The law-enforcement agencies had beefed up security ahead of the arrival of President Mamnoon Hussain who visited the hospital from the federal capital by road in a heavily guarded motor convoy. Well-equipped cops, commandos of Elite Force and personnel of other law-enforcement agencies were deployed around the hospital and along the roads leading to Rawalpindi to avoid any untoward incident.

The President reached hospital at 2:30pm and got examined his eyes by Dr Maj Gen Mazhar Ishaq. The President’s convoy was heading towards Islamabad when a low-intensity blast occurred outside traffic headquarters on Peshawar Road, forcing the law-enforcement agencies, including Elite Force commandos, running here and there to trace out the culprit but all in vain.

“It was a very low-intensity blast that might be caused by some ordinary firework. I think some commuter threw it while driving in a bid to terrorise the commandos,” an Elite Force commando seeking anonymity told this scribe, as he was not authorised to talk to media. He said that it was done by some citizen only for the sake of adventure.

“We are sorry we could not see him while throwing the firework,” said an inspector of Punjab police when asked. The superintendent of police (security), despite several attempts, could not be contacted for his comments.
