KARACHI - Jamil Sakarni an old and long friend of the sports of snooker and currently president of Sindh Snooker Association arranged a glittering function here on late Friday night to hail the new world amateur champion M Asif and hand him over a cash award of Rs. 100,000 on behalf of his snooker body.

The cash award given by Sakrani was different than other awards because he had announced the amount soon after Asif entered the final and not after he won the title unlike most of other awards. The announcements of most of the cash awards to Asif were made after the Pakistani won the title second time for Pakistan on December 2 this year. It was M Yousuf who won the first world title for Pakistan in South Africa in 1994.

Top officials of Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association Asghar Valika, Alamgir Shaikh, Munawwar Shaikh and some top businessmen of the city attended the function. Couple of businessmen also announced cash awards of Rs. 0.1 million each on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion 30-year-old Asif said his next target was taking the Asian title and turn professional. However to enter the professional snooker league he said he would need an amount close to Rs. Two million which he hoped he had to raise with the support of the government and friends of the sport.

He thanked all those who had welcomed him when he arrived with the world crown in Karachi and also all those who gave him the cash awards or had promised to do that. He also thanked the head of a well known housing project for giving him an expensive car. He also thanked the PBSA and its president Alamgir Shaikh who had made special effort to send him to Sofia along with Asajd Iqbal despite financial difficulties.

In the meantime the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Federation through a press release had reminded that  the  Prime Minister of Pakistan has announced a Cash Award of Rs.1.5 Million plus a job, the Chief Minister of Punjab had announced a Cash Award of Rs.1 Million, the Chief Minister of Sindh had announced a Cash Award of Rs.1 Million, the Khyber Pakhtunkhawa, Minister for Sports had also announced a Cash Award of Rs.1 Million and the Federal Minister for Sports, Mir Hazar Khan Bijrani had announced a Cash Award amounting to Rs.10 Million from the Pakistan Sports Board/Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination (Sports) for M Asif.
