MANDI BAHAUDDIN - A Human Rights Commission of Pakistan's workshop titled "People's Mobilisation for Democratic Rights", was held and attended by various non-governmental organizations' representatives.

Addressing the workshop, Mahboob Khan Advocate, the president of the HRCP Punjab, said that such workshops were being held at selected cities to educate people to use their democratic rights. He said democracy was the name of attitude to help one another. This took start in Greece where people elected their head through direct vote. But now in state with large population it was not possible therefore heads of states are elected through indirect votes.

He said democracy was the best form of government that provides equal opportunism to all the citizens and every citizen participates in business of state affairs. Therefore, it is necessary for every citizen to cast vote in favour of hones and competent candidates, he added. Besides, he observed, every citizen should check his vote in the lists maintained at election office concerned.

"The voters should go to polling stations at their own for casting votes. They should not use transport of candidates. Progress is made more in the countries exercising democratic systems. When our people would exercise their right of vote in favour of competent candidates this will strengthen democracy resulting into prosperity of nation," he added.  Earlier, the HRCP Mandi Bahauddin coordinator briefed the President Punjab HRCP about their activities with regard to performance and monitoring human rights in the district. Professor Saleem, Afzal Gondal Advocate, Chaudhry Hameed, Liaqat also addressed the workshop. They highlighted the importance of exercising democratic rights for empowerment of citizens to resolve their problems.

They said the local government was the best form of government and it gives speedy relief to the citizens and resolves their problems in an amicable way. It was unfortunate, the incumbent government has dissolved this government, they added. They demanded the restoration of local governments as soon as possible for enabling the citizens to get their problems resolved at their doorsteps.
