ISLAMABAD PTV, Army, NBP and WAPDA cruised into the semi-finals of the 1st Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Gold Cup Hockey Tournament by beating their respective opponents here at Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex on Thursday. The semi-finals will be played on Friday (today) at the same venue, as WAPDA will meet Army in the first semi-final while Pakistan Television (PTV) will take on National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in the second semi-final of the prestigious national hockey event. The final of the tournament will be played on Saturday. In the first quarterfinal, PTV snatched a 3-1 win from Pakistan Air Force (PAF) after going down 0-1 at water break. Khaliq Khan led PAF in the 23rd minute of the match by netting the ball in the first part of the match. PTV tried their best to level the match before interval but their all efforts went in vain. However, in the second half, PTV displayed excellent skills of the game, netting the ball three times to grab a comprehensive win to gain berth in the semi-finals of a prominent national hockey event after a gap of five years. Muhammad Zulifqar, Waqas Jameel and Rizwan-ul-Haq scored one goal each for the winners. Meanwhile, in the second quarterfinal, Pakistan Army ousted Port Qasim 4-3 on penalty strokes. Both teams could not score any goal in the 70 minutes game. They also finished 15 minutes extra time goalless. To decide the match, both teams were given five-penalty strokes each. The Army men converted four of these into goals, while Port Qasim scored three penalties. Armys goalkeeper Rizwan Khan stopped two pushes of their opponent while Rashid Yaqoob could stop only one. Waqas Junior, Khalid Khan, Muhammad Kashif and Rao Shahid scored the goal for the winners, while Wasif Khan, Mohsin Bilal and Javad Mazhar scored the goals for Port Qasim, whereas Shahzad and Qasir missed the penalty strokes. In the 3rd quarterfinal, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) stunned Habib Bank Limited (HBL) 7-4 to move ahead in the semi-final of the tournament. Olympian Nadeem ND and Muhammad Imran Warsis hat tricks dominated the NBPs monopoly during the 70-minute game. At water break, NBP were leading 3-2. Winners were well-together in the second half to overcome their opponents. They added four goals in their tally to make the score-line 7-4 at the end of the match. Rana Zubair and Shahbaz Ali netted the ball twice for NBP. NBP will now meet PTV in the semi-final on Friday (today) at the same venue. It was a well-contested quarterfinal where both teams WAPDA and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) displayed excellent skill of game throughout their match. The quarterfinal was equalled 4-4 after 70 minutes. Since the winners were leading 2-0 at half time, it was expected to be a single-sided competition. However, PIA changed their strategy and scored four goals in the second half. Adeel scored two goals for WAPDA in the first half, while Shabbir and Muddassar netted the ball in the second half. Muddassar scored a goal on penalty strokes. Waqas Akbar scored two goals for the HBL, while Ishanullah and Yasir Islam struck once for the losing side. Kamran Sharif and Rana Liaquat supervised the match, though the PIA players were not satisfied with a couple of Kamrans decisions.
