LAHORE Pakistans sensational junior Davis Cup player Samir Iftikhar staged major upsets in the ITF Junior World Ranking Tennis in Dubai. Samir raised the Pakistan flag high by eliminating Indias Yash Deshanbe at the Grade-IV Dubai Open being held at Aviation Club Dubai from October 19 to 24 and later stunned the number 4 seed of the tournament Richter Sebastian from Germany on Thursday in sweltering heat with convincing scores of 6-3, 2-0 to reach the last eight. He broke the Germans serve in the 7th Game and held his serve with two aces to win the first set at 6-3. In the second set, Samir broke his opponents serve with powerful backhand down the line passing shot at break point and held his service to lead 2-0 when Richter after retrieving from long rally at 30-all slipped and injured himself and conceded the match. Samir will now face number 8th seed Vladmir Polyakov from Russia. It is pertinent to mention that British-based Samir Iftikhar is the grandson of great Indo-Pak tennis legend Kh Iftikhar Ahmad and son of former Davis Cupper Tayyab Iftikhar and first cousin of Pakistan tennis ace Aisamul Haq. In an exclusive talks with The Nation, Samirs father, former Davis Cupper Tayyab Iftikhar hailed his performance. He said that Samir has the world class talent as described by tennis pundits home and abroad where in a short span of one year on the circuit with limited exposure, he has beaten twice higher world ranked players. He hoped to have proper sponsor for Samir which would help the youngster follow his career in international junior circuit to follow the footsteps of his great Grandfather Kh Iftikhar Ahmad and cousin Aisam.
