While liberal Islam is considered a myth, this burka-clad guitarist is turning heads, one performance at a time.

Much debate over the existence of liberal Islam has taken place for several years, but to no avail.

However, one Muslim woman is shattering Islamic stereotypes by proving Islam and music can go hand in hand.

Gisele Marie, the granddaughter of German Catholics, converted to Islam a few months after her father’s demise in 2009. However, her change of faith did not hinder her passion for music as she decided to front her bothers heavy metal band “Spectrus” three years later.

"People do not expect to see a Muslim woman who uses a Burka, practices the religion properly and is a professional guitarist who plays in a Heavy Metal band, so many people are shocked by it. But other people are curious and find it interesting, and others think that it is cool, but definitely, many people are shocked,” she said.

Even though Marie might face criticism from Muslim scholars and notables around the world, this female could be a game-changer for how the world views Islam, and initiate a whole new debate for change.
