It is a matter of great rejoicing for the people that the government has recently recovered tons of sugar stored by the mill owners/dealers at different places. But the question is whether the people will get the benefit of it. It is interesting to note that the government first allows rapid increase in prices, then suddenly takes action to befool people. They sometime reduce the price by a rupee or two but that is often of no benefit to the people. In the Shaukat Aziz era, this same dance was enacted through out the year. Most mill owners are either in government or opposition. Even if some are not they are related to each other and look after their common interests. In the month of Ramadan in particular, they collaborate very well with each other and earn a lot of money by fleecing their consumers who are also their voters. Unfortunately, our voters re-elect these people in every election. -SH. MUHAMMAD FAROOQ, Lahore, via e-mail, August 17.
