Pakistani authorities said that Rao Anwar has been charged with murder after an investigation found him responsible for “stage-managing” the death of a 27-year-old aspiring model in Karachi.

Sanaullah Abbasi, a senior police officer, told The Associated Press that Naqeeb Ullah was not linked to militants as claimed by officer Rao Anwar after he killed him in a Jan 13 shootout.

Abbasi said Anwar has been relieved of his duties and authorities have barred him from leaving Pakistan.

Naqeeb Ullah’s family claims he was detained earlier this month but was later killed by Anwar in what investigators called a staged “fake shootout.”

Anwar is on a Taliban hit list and escaped an assassination attempt last year when a suicide bomber nearly blew himself up near his vehicle.
