ISLAMABAD Although Pakistan has to postpone the National Games twice owing to security reasons, yet the youth of the country has shown its enthusiasm for sports by actively participating in the first Mini Marathon Race for Peace which was held here at Pakistan Sports Complex to celebrate the Pakistan Day. Over 550 athletes took part in the marathon that was held under the aegis of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) on the directives of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to revive the sporting activities in the country. The event, won by Ashan Ali, delivered a massage to other countries that the people of Pakistan love sports. However, the race started from Roshan Khan Squash Complex and secretary Ministry of Sports Anis-ul-Husnain Mosvi waved the national flag off to start the mini marathon. The athletes from the local collages, departments and other organisations ran to win the title. The route of the race was Kashmir Highway, Rose and Jasmine Garden, Chand Tara, Shakarparian Road and then entered Pakistan Sports Complex from Gate number five. After covering four kilometre distance, the athletes crossed the finishing line at Liaquat Gymnasium. The participants wore complimentary shirts, which were provided by the organising committee of the PSB. Among the participants were students of local institutions, general public and former national and international sportsmen. The race was led by Syed Habib Shah, former national record holder in 100 meter race. After the race, a closing ceremony held at Liaquat Gymnasium, Pakistan Sports Complex that was graced by Federal Minister for Sports Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakharani as chief guest. He distributed prizes among the top performers. Syed Director General PSB Amir Hamza Gilani, and chief organiser Dr. Abdul Waheed Mughal and Deputy Director General PSB Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera were also present on the occasion. Jakhrani also distributed awards among the fifty lucky draw winners. On this eve, Federal Minister for Sports appreciated the efforts of participants and organisers for smooth conduct and successful conclusion of the race. He further said that Pakistan would fight against the terrorism. We will combat terrorism with strong will and fortitude. We belong to a peaceful nation and we want to maintain peace and harmony and this is our message to whole world through sports activities, he added.
