ISLAMABAD - Youth employment status as employers and self-employed is only 0.04 million and 2.6 million respectively in the country which can be attributed due to lack of entrepreneurship education to become employers of self-employed.

The data mentioned in Annual Plan 2013-14 reveals that current ratio of youth employers in the country is 0.27 percent while self-employed, unpaid family helpers and employees are 17.8 percent, 43.2 percent, 38.8 percent respectively. The total youth population, the documents said, is estimated at 55.7 million, of which 16.3 million are in the category of labour force.

Out of total youth labour force, 14.6 million are employed while remaining 1.7 million are unemployed, implying 10.3pc youth unemployment rate which is higher than the national unemployment rate of 6pc. Talking to APP here official sources said the entrepreneurial activity among youth can be increased if the students are provided with business wisdom, inspiration and motivation, either through mentorship by experts or by stressing on the importance of business opportunities in the curriculum.

Demand-driven technical education, they remarked, along with entrepreneurial education in curriculum is considered as a solution to youth unemployment. They suggested that advocacy around youth issues, investing in youth, especially smoothing the transition from school to work and creating more opportunities for youth employment are some other areas that need attention of the policy makers and implementers.

Supporting innovative entrepreneurship, they further said, along with youth entrepreneurship would also be helpful to reduce the burden of unemployment in the economy.

They said facilitation to private sector for economic growth as well as for employment generation can also be considered a prudent policy to solve the problem of unemployment.

They opined that facilitating the labour intensive sectors such as construction, small and cottage industry as well as personal and commercial services are helpful to improve employment elasticity in the country.
