KARACHI - Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Hussain Mehanti flayed the government Thursday for increasing General Sales Tax by 1per cent and termed the decision as an extra burden on the masses.

He said the interim government took the step under an intention to present a mini budget, as it has failed to achieve the tax collection target. He termed the increase in GST as a step against the people who are already facing a skyrocketing price hike of commodities.  “Due to the anti-people policies of the PPP-led coalition government, the masses are already facing grave crises including inflation, unemployment and poverty,” he said adding now the interim government’s decision of increasing GST by 1pc under such circumstances would definitely aggravate the situation. Mehanti demanded the government to withdraw the decision in the best interest of the nation.

Similarly, the JI lashed out at the KESC administration for the ongoing prolonged power loadshedding in different areas of the city. JI’s former MPs Muzaffar Ahmed Hashmi, Laeeq Khan, Nasrullah Khan Shajih, Younas Barai and Hameedullah Khan Advocate said the KESC administration has failed to overcome the issue, as 10 to 16 hours load-shedding is underway in many areas of the metropolis.

They feared the unannounced loadshedding might create law and order issue, as the people are holding protests against the issue. They demanded immediate redressal of the issue, so the people could get relief in the scorching summer.
