"No taxation without representation" said the Americans in their war of independence against the British colonial rule (Boston Tea Party) in the eighteenth century. Here we are in the 21st century and my car token tax, which till the last year was only Rs. 600 per year for cars up to 1000 cc but has been raised to Rs. 2620 within a year. This is a rise of almost 400 % in taxation with the stroke of a pen, i.e. through an executive order. This is daylight robbery. Can someone explain to me why should I pay through the nose for someone else's incompetence, corruption, inefficiency and spendthrift habits? -JAVED MALIK, Lahore, October 16.
