ISLAMABAD - Former prime minister and PML-N central leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that PTI government was blatantly lying and holding previous government responsible for their own economic and administrative follies.

Flanked by Mussadaq Malik and Maryam Aourengzeb, the former premier in a press conference here at National Press Club claimed that the LNG import deal struck during the previous government was the cheapest one and was vital for meeting the energy needs of the country.

He challenged Federal Petroleum Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan and Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry for an open debate on the issue and rejected their allegation of holding his government responsible for the current economic crisis.

He said that he was ready to face consequences had anything against him or the transparency of LNG deal is brought to fore by the incumbent government and once again reiterated his claim of having struck the cheapest deal on LNG with Qatar. He further explained that some 30 countries across the globe are using LNG and the deal they had struck with Qatar was the cheapest one and they are using the LNG in most successful manner.

He said that some 3600MW power plants were being run on LNG and that was the reason not only the power crisis in the country was successfully tackled but on a very cheap rates they are providing electricity to both general public and industry.

He further explained that had the PML-N government not struck the LNG import deal the government had to rely on power production on costly fuel like furnace oil which would obviously had its impact on the people using electricity.

Criticising the government for blatantly lying with the masses Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that castles of cards could not last long and the people of Pakistan would soon realise the truth of PTI allegations against the previous government soon. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi claimed that when they had relinquished the charge of the government the foreign exchange reserves stood at 16 billion US dollars and this figure could be counter-checked with State Bank of Pakistan.

He said that in a short span of couple of months in power PTI government due to its incompetence and wrong handling of things have plunged the national economy into deep crisis and now have started blaming the previous government for their mismanagement.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that as the prime minister he had taken number of decisions and he was ready to defend each and every move he had taken while in office as while taking policy decisions the foremost thing in his mind was the welfare and betterment of people of this country.

He also grilled PTI government’s attempt to make the projects under CPEC controversial, adding in the power projects initiated under CPEC they had saved over Rs2 billion public money by better negotiation with China.

To a question, he said that the projects initiated under CPEC mainly pertains to power generation, communication network development and overall infrastructure development.

He said that the projects with China could be renegotiated provided both the countries agree to it but the way PTI government was trying to make these projects controversial would no way in the interest of the country.

To a question he admitted that the failure of successive governments of PPP and PML-N which failed to abrogate the draconian law of NAB.
