ISLAMABAD - It could be mere coincidence that Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi of the PML-Q is in US while PPP Co-Chairman President Asif Ali Zardari is also out there for the UN General Assembly but the political observers took it the other way round.Although former Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is trying his luck by getting through with the PPP leadership outside the country, serious elements of his party, even his family factor, were rather tilted towards the opposite direction. Well-placed sources in the PML-Q believe that party President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain along with his diehard fellows was not in favour of seeking an alliance with the Pakistan Peoples Party. On the other hand, they (Shujaat and followers) have been dreaming of the so-called reunion of the Pakistan Muslim League by merging their faction into the faction led by the former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.     Sources revealed to The Nation that the difference of opinion among the Chaudhry brothers was not new but it had been existing since the days they used to be in government under the all-powerful umbrella of the then President General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf. Previously, they mentioned, difference had surfaced among the Chaudhrys at the time of operation in Balochistan that killed Nawab Akbar Bugti. Shujaat had vehemently opposed the military operation against Bugti.  Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and other Q-Leaguers went along the then regime in favour of operation against Bugti leaving Shujaat overruled and helpless in protecting the benefactor of his father. Similarly, the sources also recalled Chaudhry Shujaat's role and efforts to prevent the debacle of Lal Masjid in Islamabad last year. There again Shujaat had convinced the Lal Masjid administration to stay on talking terms with the government while it was the then Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz who proceeded on with a military operation in the capital rather than honouring the then ruling party leader's commitments. Therefore, the sources related that here again even though Shujaat is the leader of the defeated and beleaguered party, a majority of authority-loving members value Pervaiz Elahi more in practical decisions. Thus, Pervaiz Elahi may not be having the backing of the party president but he definitely has a significant parliamentary strength of his party in his pocket that vie for a share in power what come may, the sources maintained. While the sources were not sure about the likely meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Pervaiz Elahi in London, they confirmed that the two would definitely be meeting in the US. Agenda of their meeting would be nothing but hatching a conspiracy against the PML-N rule in Punjab, the sources said adding that it may not be straight alliance between the PPP and the PML-Q on the face of it. The sources mentioned that the immediate resignation of Pervaiz Elahi from the slot of the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly was the first sign of the so-called Zardari-Pervez nexus developing covertly. Still sources in the PPP rushed to downplay even the importance of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi ahead of PML-Q's potential to have an alliance with the ruling party. They observed that Zardari would not put his political career at stake as a consequence of joining hands with the party whom he himself had called a Katil(murderer) League when his spouse the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed in Rawalpindi late last year. Similarly, they added, "How Zardari could sit with a political leader whose name Benazir wrote amongst those plotting to get her murdered?"
