LAHORE - The newly-passed Local Government Act, 2013, has been challenged in the high court through a constitutional petition calling for the conduct of local government elections on party basis.

The plea, moved on Saturday, argues that Article 140-A of the Constitution was being violated by making municipal elections non-party based.

The petitioner submits that according to the article, each province must establish a government system and delegate the administrative, financial and political responsibility to local government representatives chosen in elections held by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Non-party based election would be a violation of the Constitution and would aggravate corruption and irregularities in the province, argued the petitioner-lawyer, Ishtiaq Chaudhry.  He requested the court to set aside the act and issue orders to the provincial government for local bodies elections on party basis.
