Federal Minister for Science and Technology Zahid Hamid has said that early rehabilitation of the flood-affected people is top priority of the government, and urged the local lawmakers to come up to the nation’s expectations.

He added that special surveys have been launched in Sialkot district to assess the actual losses of life, property and crops in the flood affected areas especially in Pasrur tehsil.

He was talking to the flood affected people after distribution of ration bags to 3,000 families in at Chawinda, Badiana, Chobara, Phalora, Naaju Chak, Bagiyaari, Bajra Garhi and Chahoor in Pasrur.

The federal minister said that the survey reports would soon be sent to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for financial compensation of the victims. He said that the PM would soon announce a relief package for these people. He added that the federal and the provincial governments had not left the flood affectees alone.

He added that the government was standing by the flood affectees in this hour of need and every effort would be made for their rehabilitation. He said that the PML-N government had evolved a comprehensive programme for the relief and rehabilitation of marooned people.

He stated that the PML-N government was implementing an effective flood-fighting strategy. He revealed that no effort would be spared for the relief and rehabilitation, and no laxity or negligence in this regard will be tolerated. He said that besides rehabilitation of the land routes to the areas cut off by heavy rains, provision of ration, medicines and other essential items to the stranded people would also be ensured.

He urged the MNAs and MPAs to come up to the expectations of the people and play their due role in solving their problems at this difficult time. He said that besides rehabilitation of the affectees, financial assistance will be given to the families of those who lost their lives in flood. He also directed to take special measures for the protection of livestock and crops in the flood affected areas.

On the occasion, MPA Rana Liaqat Ali and Assistant Commissioner Pasrur Touqeer Zia Cheema briefed the federal minister regarding flood situation and relief activities in Pasrur tehsil. They also informed the federal minister about the problems of the flood affectees.

Later, talking to the newsmen at Badiana-Pasrur, Zahid Hamid pledged early removal of all the encroachments from the seasonal nullah Dek which passes through Pasrur tehsil by plays havoc during every flood season. He also listened to the problems of flood-hit people of Sialkot and said that hectic efforts were being made to ensure early draining of floodwater from city areas.
